How Surrogate Therapy Differs From Surrogate Pregnancy

The first thing you should know is that the term surrogate therapy does not have anything to do with pregnancy or having babies. What it does address are sexual problems between a couple. These problems might include impotence, lack of desire, inability to achieve sexual pleasure, emotional hangups about sex and more. By going to this type of therapy you enter into a relationship with a third party who is trained in the practice of sexual surrogacy. IPSA stands for the International Professional Surrogates Association and is a good place to start.

During therapy, the individual or couple receiving the therapy will learn valuable skills related to intimacy that can help remedy their sexual problems. Therapy may even help bring couples emotionally closer together as it teaches skills for emotional interaction as well. It is important to keep an open mind when it comes to using a sexual surrogate for therapy purposes, because it is not the most traditional method of therapy available. There may be bodily interaction at times between the surrogate and client depending on the specifics of the therapy prescribed.

A sexual surrogate giving a client or clients therapy may perform intimate acts for instructional and therapeutic purposes. While most of these surrogates are female, there are also men who perform this service and couples who work as a team. There is no licensing for this kind of therapy which is why IPSA has their own code of ethics. This association can also help match you with a surrogate that is right for your particular needs. It is extremely important that the person or persons receiving surrogate therapy are at ease with the person they are working with.

Is surrogate therapy the next big thing when it comes to sex therapy? Probably not. After all, many couples are not keen on the idea of a third party being intimately involved with themselves or their partner. It is probably more useful for individuals as there is no partner who will get jealous. Most couples visit sex therapists who take a strictly traditional approach of talk therapy and sometimes medication for sexual dysfunction.
